Ma 112

Laptops

This semester we will be utilizing laptops in the classroom during Ma 112 classes. To the best of my knowledge this is the first time that this has been done at Stevens. The goal is to integrate the use of a laptop into the course as you learn the material. This will involve the use of Scientific Notebook, FTP, the Web, etc. This approach is experimental and is a precursor to what next year's first year students will encounter. Leib 120 has been renovated so that this experimental approach can be carried out. It is equipped with power and network connections. You will use Dell Latitude laptops which the Institute has purchased. Each Dell is a 266 MHz Pentium machine with an appropriate software suite that includes SNB, Netscape, WS_FTP, etc.

In addition to utilizing SNB and other software at appropriate intervals during class, you will be expected to turn in all assignments in SNB format. Also, quizzes and exams will often be in two parts. On one part you will be expected to use a laptop, whereas you will not be allowed to use the laptop on the other part.

This coming fall all incoming students will purchase laptops rather than PCs. These laptops will be utilized in the classroom in Ma 115 and other courses. Stevens will convert three classrooms on the second floor of Peirce to accommodate laptops. each classroom will have power and network connections for laptops.

The goal is to have your experiences in Ma 112 will give us insight into how to proceed next year. As a result, your input and suggestions are most important, so please let me know how you think things are going. From time to time I will ask you to complete a questionnaire about how you think the course is going.

I have prepared a page which outlines appropriate protocol for the use of the laptops. Please have a look.

I want to thank you in advance for your cooperation with this effort.
