    Outside Scholarships

Throughout the year the Student Service Center receives information about various scholarships that are administered by outside agencies. The application process is the responsibility of the student; however we will be happy to assist. Sponsoring agencies reserve full control over the awarding and distribution of these funds. The scholarship list changes frequently and updated information is available in the student life newsletter. Make sure to double check the year the scholarship will be awarded and the deadline date.

Society of Women Engineers is awarding 130 scholarships from $1000 to $10000 to full-time students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in ABET or CSAB accredited engineering/computer science programs. For more information and applications please visit www.swe.org/scholarships. Deadline is December 17, 2007

    CAUTION

Stevens is concerned about the growing problem of scholarship scams. These scams take a few different forms, but they typically involve someone promising you that he or she can find you a scholarship, provide you with information to help you find a scholarship or show you how to complete a financial aid application in such a way to increase your aid eligibility - all for a price. Everything you will ever need to know about financial aid is free information, and the Financial Aid staff in the Student Service Center is always available to help.

If you receive a notice that you've won a scholarship that you never applied for from an organization you've never heard of, or receive a request for a credit card number or bank account information to verify your eligibility for a scholarship, or are told that for a fee, someone can give you a list of scholarships you qualify for, you are a scam target. If you are invited to a "free seminar" where you can learn about making sure you get "your fair share" of financial aid or how you can learn to take advantage of "billions of dollars in unclaimed scholarships," proceed with extreme caution. Some scam artists, calling themselves "financial aid consultants" have found themselves - along with their clients - guilty of defrauding the Federal government by willfully providing inaccurate or misleading information on the FAFSA. As most students know, there are many free scholarship search engines on the web, such as www.fastweb.com, and believe us when we say that there are not "billions of dollars in unclaimed scholarships" anywhere. These are examples of ploys scam artists use to give students and their families the impression that the process is more difficult or more mysterious than it really is.

If you ever have any questions about this or think that you may have been the victim of a scam, please see any Financial Aid staff member in the Student Service Center. For further reading, we recommend http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/scams.phtml, a page on The SmartStudent Guide to Financial Aid web site devoted to this issue. Be a cautious consumer when it comes to financing your education.
