Attila Technologies, LLC

The Company:

Attila Technologies, LLC,was established in 2005 by a highly seasoned team of entrepreneurs/managers and technologists to commercialize a broadband multi-network router and/or associated services - The company has completed the development of proprietary software technologies for an innovative new product; a Multi-Network Communicator (MNC™) that provides secure, reliable, anywhere, anytime, turbocharged throughput to moving customers. The technology enables ondemand broadband by integrating the capacities of available wireless networks to create a high-capacity virtual channel. The MNC™ router is powered by the patent-pending DPCC™ (Dynamic Polymorphic Capacity Concatenation) technology. The DPCC™ technology is a software-only communications framework providing the best network connection, anywhere at anytime. The unique capability of the technology is to dynamically aggregate the individual capabilities of all available networks simultaneously and in real time to form the ideal communication pipe.

In this regard, Attila Technologies was formed to bring the DPCC™ technology and MNC™ to market and generate distinct, yet integrated, revenue streams. (1) high-margin from the hardware/software sales and (2) recurring monthly revenue for ongoing service and revenue sharing agreements with content providers.

Products and Services:

Attila’s core technology, DPCC™, is packaged in an innovative multi-network router that simultaneously aggregates multiple wireless access networks to offer a concatenated connection with higher capacity, coverage and security to increasingly demanding applications. The DPCC™ software also runs on portable devices such as laptop, smartphone, UMPC and PDA. A  key element of the proprietary DPCC™ system is to leverage off existing wireless infrastructure, thus building upon the substantial investment that already exists, and negating the political, administrative and financial hurdles of constructing additional towers or adding more network capacity when sophisticated new services are contemplated. Indeed, the DPCC™ approach is a major departure from today’s practice where wireless performance improvements are introduced principally through an infrastructure upgrade. Such an upgrade typically includes several years of standard development only to be followed by years of spectrum acquisition, user relocation and deployment. The DPCC™ system ensures point-to-point communication across a variety of networks, even in areas where coverage is less than ideal.  The system is targeted at a wide range of customers  who are seeking a premium communication service that provides a reliable triple-application (voice, data and video) and always-on connectivity. The innovative MNC™ solution offers true interoperability between otherwise incompatible wireless communication networks and provides a unique, cost effective solution that addresses spotty coverage, poor reliability and limited bandwidth.

The overall market opportunity for the MNC™ includes three distinct multiple-billion dollar application space: the Federal agencies and Public Safety market as well as two distinct markets in the commercial sector; multi-network capable handhelds and notebook computer and Internet-enabled vehicles.

Competitive Positioning:

Attila’s multi-network solution is uniquely positioned, delivering secure, ubiquitous broadband connectivity, irrespective of whether customers are rapidly moving or stationary. The solution has no direct competition for its key capabilities. This is in contrast with WiFi which limited coverage can only deliver wireless broadband to stationary customers. Similarly, WiMAX supports broadband, primarily to stationary users. Cellular carriers are rapidly upgrading their data capabilities from 2.5-3G to 4G, to provide near-broadband network access over larger geographical areas. At the same time, municipalities are considering the deployment of “mesh networks,” which support WiFi-equivalent broadband over limited geographical areas. Since Attila leverages the capacities of existing networks, the supported bandwidth is greater than or equal to that offered by any cellular carriers or other wireless access providers, while offering a greater security and increased coverage.

Barriers to Entry:

Patent-pending technology, significant in-house knowledge of technology field, leading experts in communication and multinetworking, significant investment in research and development over three years period.

Innovative Technology:

A single multi-network device exploiting all available networks -- offering advantages unmatched by any other approaches and redefines the broadband-enable mobile market.

(1) Persistency of Signal/Coverage

By utilizing multiple networks simultaneously, the coverage or persistency of signal is optimized and loss of signal from a single entity is eliminated.

(2) Reliability

By utilizing multiple networks simultaneously, the probability of total loss of signal is exponentially diminished.

(3) Security

The data traffic is split among multiple paths and dynamically altered, offering additional degrees of security since no one network path conveys the entire information.

(4) Bandwidth

Since the communications to and from the Attila MNC™ utilizes multiple carriers, the theoretical maximum bandwidth expansion is the linear summation of the individual network bandwidths. On average, in the least optimized scenarios, the protocol overhead is less than 10%.

(5) Interoperability

By relying on existing private or commercial capabilities, the network solution in one state or city is interoperable in other states or cities since the underlying networks are common on a nationwide basis.

Investment Considerations

On considering the investment merits of Attila’s technology, it is important to recognize the following:

Attila has developed a unique and truly innovative solution to a burning problem and has the potential to attack three separate multi-billion markets with an already built and proven solution.

Breakthrough and timely application – The software solution addresses the frustrations with the substantial and growing wireless communications industry. Additionally, the solution has no direct competition for its key capabilities

Cost – The solution solves a technical challenge facing the U.S. wireless communications industry.  The need for expanded coverage is surpassed only by the cost to expand coverage.

Proprietary design – Attila has gone to great lengths to protect the intellectual property that is behind the DPCC™ technology. The technology Attila has developed from the ground up,is the results of 2 years of research funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and 3 years of active development. The technology itself is characterized by at least three significant barriers to entry. The initial investment risk will not exaggerated by the massive entry of copycat companies as commercialization takes off, principally owing to the fact that (1) the nature of the knowledge invested in the technology lends itself to patent protection, (2) the knowledge required to design the system and design algorithms makes it easy to maintain trade secrets and (3) Development time cannot be short-circuited, enhancing the value of long-term strategic partnerships

Strong foothold in the three distinct addressable markets identified by the company

Software product is essentially finished and has been tested by three industry-leading potential customers in each market -

Experienced management – The management team is an experienced and highly respected group of professionals in the telecommunications, scientific, engineering, and business communities.

Partnership and exit opportunities – Attila’s broad appeal to various large markets make the company an ideal acquisition candidate. Potential interested parties include the plethora of communication companies seeking to expand their product offering into new markets. Typical valuations are 3-10 times revenues, with some outliers in the 18-20 range. As a first company in the segment, Attila could receive a highest multiplier focusing on executing its business plan.

Based on conservative business assumptions and in accordance with the feedback received from  three separate foothold customers the company has working relationship with, the company is expected to reach profitability in 2010 and to generate $40M of revenues by the end of 2011, by just executing its core business plan.
