Collegiate Inventors Competition

The Collegiate Inventors Competition is an international awards program designed to encourage college students active in science, engineering, mathematics, technology and creative invention, while stimulating their problem-solving abilities.

While encouraging student/advisor relationships, innovations, and creative problem solving, the Collegiate Inventors Competition seeks to stimulate excitement and interest in technology and economic leadership. By recognizing creative people, we can accomplish these goals.

Program Objectives

The Collegiate Inventors Competition is an international competition designed to encourage college students to be active in science, engineering, mathematics, technology and creative invention, while stimulating their problem-solving abilities. This prestigious challenge recognizes the working relationship between a student and his or her advisor who are involved in projects leading to inventions that can be patented.

While encouraging student/advisor relationships, innovation, and creative problem solving, the competition seeks to stimulate excitement and interest in technology and economic leadership. By recognizing these creative people, we can accomplish these goals.

The Collegiate Inventors Competition was introduced in May 1990 as the BFGoodrich Collegiate Inventors Program.

Eligibility

Students must be enrolled, or have been enrolled, full-time (in any college or university) at least part of the 12-month period prior to the date the entry is submitted. In the case of a team, with a maximum of 4 students, at least one member of the team must meet the full-time eligibility criteria. The other team members must have been enrolled, as a minimum, on a part-time basis sometime during the 24-month period prior to the date the entry is submitted.

There are no limits on the number of entries a student or team may submit in a given year, however, only one prize per student or team will be awarded.

There are no specific age requirements, however, if an entrant is under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the Student/Advisor Release Form.

Judging

The committee of judges includes mathematicians, engineers, biologists, chemists, environmentalists, physicists, computer specialists, members of the medical professions, and specialists in creativity and invention. The judges decisions will be final.

The invention will be judged on the originality and inventiveness of the new idea, process or technology. It must be complete, workable, and well articulated. It will also be judged on its potential value to society (socially, environmentally, and economically), and on its range or scope of use.

Final judging is an opportunity to clarify entries with the judges. It is also an exciting meeting with other top students of technology. The Collegiate Inventors Competition winners will be presented immediately following the judging. Student winners must be present at the judging and awards to receive their cash prize.
