Undergraduate Environmental Engineering Program

Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Engineering
Environmental engineering has traditionally been taught as a branch of civil engineering concerned with the supply of safe drinking water and the sanitary disposal of municipal wastes. The field has expanded in recent years to include many new areas, such as the treatment of industrial and hazardous wastes, the prediction of the fate and transport of pollutants in the environmental, and the design of systems for remediation of sites contaminated with hazardous wastes. This has placed new demands on engineers to understand the fundamental environmental transformation processes that describe natural and engineered systems.

Our undergraduate offerings include subjects basic to all environmental engineering, and the program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Mission and Objectives
The environmental engineering program provides a broad-based education that prepares students in the technical and social fundamentals that will enable them to have a wide impact in the improvement of interactions between humans and their environment.

The objectives of the program are aligned with these expectations of our graduates:

  • Graduates of our program will be recognized as being among the best in the businessby their peers.
  • Graduates of our program integrate the fundamental principles of environmental engineering at an advanced level in comparison with their peers.
  • Graduates of our program use their knowledge of the design process, reaction mechanisms, and material balance methods to create innovative solutions to environmental problems.
  • Graduates of our program demonstrate exemplary sensitivity to social factors including the historical, legal, political, policy, economic, ethical and public relations aspects of environmental problems.
  • Graduates of our program solve environmental problems using a systems approach, incorporating interactions with natural, engineered and social components.
  • Graduates of our program address the wider aspects of environmental problems such as sustainability, design for the environment, pollution prevention, and industrial ecology.

Minor in the Environmental Engineering
Students in other majors may qualify for minor in environmental engineering by taking the required courses indicated below. Completion of a minor indicates a proficiency beyond that provided by the Stevens engineering curriculum in the basic material of the selected area.
