Greatest 20th Century Engineering Accomplishments
Explore a list of the top 20 engineering achievements and learn how engineering shaped a century and changed the world. As a prospective student, there's no doubt you are interested in our educational programs in engineering as well as more general items such Stevens Institute and its campus, the campus location and associated points of note, etc.
Starting with the latter points first, Stevens Institute of Technology is a small private university with approximately 1500 undergraduates, a majority of whom reside on campus. Additionally there are approximately 2500 graduate students of whom 70% are part-time, many of these taking classes at satellite locations.
Stevens is located in Hoboken, New Jersey on a high bluff on the west bank of the Hudson River directly across from mid-town Manhattan in New York City. In fact the view from the Stevens campus is arguably the best vista of Manhattan and the New York Harbor.
The town of Hoboken has gone through a transition over the years from a bustling commercial waterfront town, with freighter and ocean liner piers and a somewhat gritty character, as depicted in the 1950's classic movie "On the Waterfront" starring a young Marlon Brando, to one of renaissance and redevelopment driven by an influx of young professionals taking advantage of the easy access to New York City.
Hoboken today is a cosmopolitan town with a character nearer to Greenwich Village with a wide array of restaurants, specialty stores and yet retaining an old world charm, with its brownstones and neighborhoods.
Manhattan is just a 5-minute Path System subway ride or can be reached by ferry or by buses through the Lincoln Tunnel to the Port Authority at 42nd St.
The School of Engineering is dedicated to educating students to have the breadth and depth of knowledge required to lead in their chosen profession and to provide the platform for continued personal and professional evolution through lifelong learning.
This is accomplished through a broad-based core curriculum of applied sciences, engineering sciences, design, management and the humanities coupled to a long-standing honor system. The curriculum is intended to provide for development of competencies that go beyond the purely technical. These competencies include:
- ability to analyze and provide creative solutions to problems,
- self reliance in approaching open-ended problems and in the use of information technologies,
- effective teamwork and communication skills,
- an understanding of the societal, economic, environmental and ethical impact of engineering decisions,
- and an openness to and knowledge of entrepreneurial concepts that will facilitate success in a rapidly changing business environment.
The broad-based core is a differentiating feature of a Stevens education that remains true to a tradition stretching back to the founding of the Institute in 1870, as one of the earliest Engineering Schools in the nation. The broad-based core results in a demanding curriculum - one that has stood the test of time as evidenced by the demand for our students by employers and the success of our alumni.
