The Joy of Duet Piano Playing

The College of Arts and Letters, is proud to present

“The Joy of Duet Piano Playing”

Performance Date: Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 8 p.m.

Location: Samuel C. Williams Library

The presentation will feature piano players Hye‐Seung Keum and Sojung Lee‐Hong.

The program is comprised of music solely created to be played by two people simultaneously on the same piano, or otherwise named 4‐hand pieces. The composers include Beethoven, Karl Hermann Pillney, Brahms, Faure and Ravel. Keum and Lee‐Hong are both accomplished pianists from Korea wishing to present this type of program as it is not presented very often.

Pianist Hye‐Seung Keum made her debut in playing Grieg’s a‐minor Piano Concerto with the Korean Christian Symphony at the age of twelve. She has since performed with numerous orchestras, New Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul National Symphony Orchestra, Chongju City Symphony Orchestra, Kurphaelzisches Kammer Orchestra, Sttutgart Chamber Orchestra, Pan‐Asia Orchestra and Pesaro Symphony Orchestra, Korean Symphony Orchestra and most recently with the Zilina National Orchestra where she was invited to Slovakia. The Badishe Neue Nachrichten (BNN) praised her performance with Kurphaelzisches Kammer Orchestra as “very stylish and elegant Mozart Concerto with immaculately cultivated technique”. She was also hailed as “a performer with delicate tone palette” (Darmstaedter Echo) and as “a performer with kaleidoscopic brilliance and exquisite deliberation”(Otago Daily Times).

A native of Korea, Prof. Keum began piano studies in her hometown at the age of five. She has since studied with Prof. Nak‐Ho Paek at the Seoul National University and Prof. Naoyuki Taneda and Prof. Wolfgang Manz at the Kalsruhe Staatliche Musik Hochschule in Germany for her Kuensterliche Ausbildung (KA‐equivalent to master in performing art) and Konzert Examen (KE‐equivalent to doctor
in performing art) degrees majoring in piano performance. Currently she is an Artist‐in‐Residence with the College of Arts and Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey until June 2009.

Sojung Lee‐Hong has enjoyed her dual career as a performer and educator since she joined music faculty at Judson University in Elgin, Illinois. Born in Seoul, Korea, she received her early music training at Yewon Arts Middle School and Seoul Arts High School, Korea. The honorable awards include the President's Award from Seoul National University and the Founder's Award from Seoul Arts High School as valedictorian.

After receiving Bachelor and Master of music degrees in Seoul National University, she continued her study at the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign and earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and literature. In the U.S. she has appeared as a recitalist in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, and performed concertos with Valley Civic Orchestra, Elgin College Community Orchestra, Judson University Community Orchestra, and Germania Orchestra of Saginaw, Michigan. She has also given many solo and chamber music recitals at such major venues as the Seoul Arts Center, Sejong Arts Center, and Hoam Arts Hall in Korea. Currently, she teaches piano as Associate Professor at Judson University.
