May 2014 Roundtable

Organizational culture represents the collective values, behavioral norms, expectations, beliefs and principles shared by organizational members, and is a product of such factors as history, management style, product, market, technology, strategy, type of employees, etc. (after Needle, 2004). 

The underlying culture of the organization affects the way people and groups interact with each other, and exerts profound impacts, positive and negative, upon organizational attitudes and performance in many areas: ethics, governance, safety, innovation, response to change, risk management, human resources, customer service, etc.

Because of the great influence culture exerts on how organizations perform, the Alliance has devoted many past Roundtables to various aspects of this subject. In response to Partner interest, we are returning to this topic after a long hiatus in the May Roundtable, which will be the first of a series falling under the theme Culture and Contemporary Organizations. It will transition us from the theme of the last several meetings, Design Thinking — itself a powerful mechanism for influencing corporate culture. The May 6th Roundtable will begin our exploration by delving into the effect of culture on innovation. 

Co-facilitators for the Roundtable will be Tony Le Storti, Alliance Senior Associate, and Lem Tarshis, Alliance Director of Management Technology Transfer. Lem, one of the researchers in the original Alliance study of the topic, will review the HSATM Innovation Model. Although this model came out of the first Alliance study some 20 years ago, we believe the results to be still valid today. Tony, a long-time scholar of culture and innovation, will present some recent findings as viewed through a variety of perspectives or “lenses.” These perspectives include highly successful versus lesser projects, more versus less productive laboratories, helping cultures and networks, the everyday sense of challenge, and the use of contest or conflict to produce the highest quality ideas.

At subsequent Roundtables, we will move to other important implications of culture for corporate performance, following where HSATM Partner interests take us. The meetings will provide forums for sharing Partner experiences and challenges in trying to change culture within their organizations.


Virtual participation

You can participate in this meeting from a remote location. While virtual participation will not provide the full benefits of actual attendance, it is a worthwhile alternative for those who cannot attend in person. Please indicate to if you would like to participate virtually and instructions will be provided.
