The culture of an organization — the shared assumptions, values and beliefs that lead to specific behavioral norms among organizational members — affects the way people and groups interact with each other, and exerts profound impacts, positive and negative, upon organizational attitudes and performance in many areas: ethics, governance, safety, innovation, response to change, risk management, human resource management, customer service — indeed, on virtually every aspect of organizational activity.
The September Roundtable will extend our investigation of tools to effect culture change, and will examine several specific case studies. Steve Jacobs, HSATM Senior Associate, will facilitate the discussion, with the participation of several volunteers from Alliance Partner organizations who have undergone, or are undergoing, culture change. Through short, interactive presentations, they will share experiences, learnings and challenges in attempts at changing culture. All attendees are invited to come with anecdotes from their own culture change experiences.
The case studies will address many of the following questions:
- Why was/is the culture change necessary?
- Was the target the whole company or a subset of the company?
- Where did the driving force to change the culture come from (the top, middle or bottom of the organization)?
- What was planned and done to undertake the change?
- What levels of leadership, or people, were targeted to help change the culture?
- What obstacles were/are in the way of achieving or sustaining change?
- How are/were these barriers overcome?
The Roundtable will be hosted by John Wiley & Sons at their corporate headquarters, 111 River St., Hoboken, NJ. A light networking lunch will be served from 11:30-12:30.
