Crisis Leadership: Preventing, Containing, Restoring
Under the broad theme of "New Thinking for Today's Leaders", the 2010 HSATM Roundtable meetings have addressed the implications of the "new leadership thinking" for communicating and gaining acceptance of significantly new initiatives, as well as for motivating today's knowledge professionals. The October meeting will turn to the implications of the new thinking for crisis leadership.
A crisis is an event that threatens, or has the potential to threaten, the organization. Despite the best strategic planning, a crisis may come from an exogenous factor such as a natural disaster, a downturn in the economy, or a competitor who comes "out of nowhere" with a new technology. It may also arise from a loss of reputation for quality, an explosion, a disgruntled employee, and other endogenous causes. Crisis leadership is not crisis management, the reaction (in large part, public relations) to an unfortunate event. Rather, it is the continuously proactive approach to anticipating and preventing such problems, and, should they nevertheless occur, containing their impact and restoring the organization as quickly as possible to full operation.
Participants in this Roundtable will be engaged in discussing crises they face or have faced and how best to prepare for and respond to crises of varying sorts. Participants are strongly encouraged to come with a specific crisis or type of crisis to offer for exploration. To further effective discussion, we will jointly explore such questions as:
- What are the different categories of crises?
- What organizational "defense mechanisms" hinder crisis leadership?
- What are "normal accidents" and why should they be very worrisome?
- What are "weak signals" and why is it crucial to notice them and connect the dots?
- Why are "predictable surprises" so devastating?
- What can we learn from "high reliability organizations"?
Participants, with the facilitation of HSATM Senior Associate Anthony Le Storti, will come away with an appreciation of how the "new thinking"mailto: can be brought to bear to prevent and deal with the variety of crises that any organization faces.
The meeting is being hosted by AT&T Labs/R&D Center, 200 South Laurel Avenue, Middletown, NJ. A networking lunch will be available from 11:30-12:30.
