Students in the MS in Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A) program use a number of software packages and programming languages to solve homework problems and develop solutions to realistic data analytics projects. The major software packages used in the program are R, SAS and Python. The following free resources are available to help BI&A students develop the required skills in these three languages.
A software “self-instruction manual” provides tips and points to resources that can be used to develop both an introductory knowledge of R, SAS and Python (for example before attending the Software Bootcamps described below) and also, over a longer period of study, to develop a high level of proficiency in these languages.
SOFTWARE PACKAGE BOOTCAMPS
The objective of the Bootcamps is to help you get started in the use of R, SAS, Python and Hadoop – at the beginning of your program of study.
Introductory Software Bootcamps
The Bootcamps provide four three-day weekends (Friday-Saturday-Sunday) of intensive training by experienced instructors. Two weekends are devoted to training in SAS and R and another two weekends are devoted to training in Python and Hadoop. The bootcamps also provide free one-day tutorials on job interview skills and communication skills. On Friday evenings distinguished guest speakers from industry provide insight on how “Big Data” is impacting their companies.
The bootcamps are taught in the Hanlon Lab of Stevens Financial Center, which is located on the 4th floor of the Babbio Center (see picture above.)
This training is offered free of charge to all students currently enrolled in BI&A courses or who are accepted to join the BI&A program in a future semester.
A program on SAS and R is currently being conducted – see sample Bootcamp program .
Professional and Technical Skills Bootcamps
In Fall 2014, four 3-day weekends of instruction in professional and technical skills will be provided free-of-charge to BI&A students as follows:
You are required to attend the bootcamps! Instructors will assume that you have this basic knowledge before you take their classes.
